To better identify who we are. Say a person have the same first and last name the middle name lets you know who's who!

First name = 1st given name

Middle name = 2nd given name

Last name = family name or surname

A given name is a name which specifies and differentiates between members of a group of individuals, especially a family, all of whose members usually share the same family name (Surname) . A given name is a name given to a person, as opposed to an inherited one 鈥?such as a family name.

A family name, surname, or last name is the part of a person's name that indicates to what family he or she belongs.

In countries that use family names, these are most often used to refer to a stranger in a formal setting, often with the use of a title such as Mr or Mrs (or equivalent). The first name, given name, or personal name is the one used by friends, family, and other intimates.

The idiom "on a first name basis" alludes to the fact that using a person's given name betokens familiarity.
Reply:Two reasons I think... 1) Identification... Middle names make our names more unique and recognizable. 2) Tradition... Most people get there middle names named after someone older in there family to honor them and carry on tradition.
Reply:Probably their is so many people and they use to have one name. What if all they had was John?

How would we ever find the one we wanted?

I know in Mexico I was told they name a child: A given name, the mothers last name, then the fathers last name.

That way you always know from both sides what family line they come from. Like McCulloch, that means the son of Culloch. This came down to us to tell us which branch we come from.
