He wanted to go with "Ricky Bobby" but that name was already taken...
Reply:For the same reason a lot of people use nicknames instead of their real names, it is easier, it allows them to assimilate, or they are given the nickname by others. You can look at Bobby Jindal and know that he is of East Indian origin, so it isn't as if he can hide what he is. Secondly, I find the concept of a "REAL American" laughable. This country was founded by immigrants who cheated and slaughtered the original inhabitants to form the USA.
Reply:Omg! I must be a threat to the US since I go by a nickname too! Oh noes! And my father, too, since he goes by one of his middle names! After all, only someone un-American would decline to use the name "William"!!! (Though it is handy to easily detect telemarketers, when they call up and ask for "Bill"...)





*note: I'm oldschool melting pot American citizen; would qualify for the Daughters of the American Revolution if I cared to look up the paperwork; yet, I go by a nickname, where my formal name is -- omg -- Irish (part of my own heritage). I strongly doubt that going by a nickname is a SIGN OF THE APOCALYPSE OMG as seems to be suggested here.





You do realize that there really are no native American names? Well, you could say American Indian, I suppose. But all other names are exports of other countries, brought along with immigrants to the US. If you want to sling mud at someone for having a foreign name, that almost certainly affects you, too.
Reply:It's unpronounceable. Many immigrants choose an 'American' name when they move here. And I believe I heard him say last night that he was born in India, so he wouldn't be eligible to run for President in 2012.





Retta: Obama's name has ALWAYS been Barack, like his father. He didn't change it to Barack. He went by Barry when he was a child. Kind of like my sister who is named Jennifer, went by Jenny as a child and back to Jennifer as an adult. Nothing scary there.
Reply:You could ask that of many Presdents - US Grant and James Earl Carter, for example. For most of his life, the current President went by Barry. Nobody ever called Eisenhower by the name of Dwight; he was always Ike. People have nicknames. One wonders how this could possibly be a new piece of information for someone.
