Vincent or Gabriel as first name for my first son?

Vincent or Gabriel??

likely to be shortened to "Vince" and "Gabe"

Vincent or Gabriel as first name for my first son?
I slightly prefer the sound of Gabriel and Gabe. Vincent is nice, but I'm not too keen on Vince. It sounds like a tough guy name, and I personally like softer sounding names for boys.

However, Gabriel is currently experiencing a surge in popularity. It ranked #28 last year. In my area at least, that translates to at least one Gabriel in the first grade every year. (I'm a first grade teacher.) If popularity is an issue for you, you may want to stay away from Gabriel.

Vincent, on the other hand, is certainly familiar but much less trendy. Its popularity has stayed fairly consistent over the years. In the last 100 years, it has varied between #60 and #121. Last year, it stood at #110. I've only known two Vincents in my life (that I can remember at least), and I've never taught a student by this name. If you are looking for a name that your son won't have to share with everyone else, I think Vincent would be an excellent pick.

I suppose Vince's tough-guy feel could be seen as an advantage. If your son turns out to be the athletic, mechanical, or super-masculine type, Vince would fit him nicely. If he ends up a being the studious type, he has the softer-sounding (but still very masculine) Vincent to suit him.
Reply:I think I like Gabriel better. But both are very nice. And it is good that you came up with names that sound good shorten, since people will do that regardless.

I agree with the other poster that said Gabriel Vincent would be a very nice name.

Whatever you choose will be good though. Congrats on your upcoming little boy!
Reply:I really like both names!

Vincent would work nicely if he'll be very Italian looking.

Why not wait until you see him and then decide which one works for him the best?
Reply:Vincent.

Reply:They're both really nice names! But if for sure you're going to shorten them, then I definitely like Vince!

Congrats on the new baby!
Reply:Vincent because Gabriel is such a Wussy name and when he's a teen he's gonna be so ashamed of his name.

I wanna call my son Gabriel when I have one. My mum wont let me, so I've decided to settle on Raphael and Gabriel in the rare event I have twin boys :)
