When did the name 'England' first appear?

Does anyone know when 'England' was first officially used as the name of the country, on documents, maps etc.

Was it used by chroniclers some time after it was in common use? Whose 'idea' was it? Was it groundbreaking as it was creating a new identity post viking rule? Or were the names of the previous kingdoms no longer relevant because of different rulers etc?

When did the name 'England' first appear?
There was a race of people called the ANGL's that lived in Britain. They were the principle indigenous race there.

So the country became known as ANGL-land, meaning the land of the Angls.

Over time the words ran together and with various mispronounciations, became known as Eng-land, or England.

Google doesn't have anything on when the word was first used, so I would estimate in the area of 100-500 AD, during the consolidation of Britain.
